After a Seven Years wait the legendary Johnny Winter will release his new studio album entitled Roots on September 27, 2011 via Megaforce Records. This album returns Johnny to his roots by paying homage to the iconic blues heroes whose pioneering music influenced Winter's own signature sound and style. Roots is the follow up to his Grammy-nominated I'm a Blues Man. Johnny Winter ROOTS album Many friends will appear as special guests and join Winter trading licks in honoring his idols, including Sonny Landreth, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, John Popper, Jimmy Vivino, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, John Medeski and Johnny's brother Edgar Winter.Among the 11 tracks that together represent a veritable history of the Blues, are songs by the genre's elder statesmen including a version of Robert Johnson's 1936 recording "Dust My Broom." Winter pays respect to the greats who came to prominence in the late 1940s and '50s including Elmore James "Done Somebody Wrong," Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Further On Up The Road" and Chuck Berry's first hit single, "Maybellene." Live at San Francisco 1989

This DVD contains rare footage of Johnny Winter during his "Captured Live" tour from 1976 and 1989 from San Francisco, CA. First up is Johnny Winter recorded during his 1976 World Tour stop in SF on 4/30/76. These two songs were filmed in black & white and have a digital counter. Songs performed are Johnny B. Goode and Jumpin' Jack Flash. Also included is a segment recorded in France for television and contains live performances as well as interviews with Johnny Winter. The interviews are most interesting as he touches on such topics as Floyd Radford, being a second guitarist in the band and wanting to do one album and a tour combining his own band and the Edgar Winter Group (this did happen and resulted in the Johnny and Edgar Winter "Together" album). Songs performed are Boney Maronie and Something's Gone Wrong. Band members for the '76 tour were Floyd Radford on second lead guitar, Randy Jo Hobbs on bass and Richard Hughes on drums. The interplay between Johnny and Floyd on lead guitars is quite extraordinary. Also included is a 1984 clip of Johnny with Jon Paris on bass and harmonica on the blues classic Treat Her Right. The final offering features Johnny's performance at the San Francisco Blues Fest on 9/9/89 during his North American tour. Performing with Johnny are Jeff Gans and Tom Compton. Songs performed are instrumental, I'm Good, Don't Take Advantage of Me, Love Her with a Feeling, Serious as a Heart Attack and Mojo Boogie, which features Johnny on slife on his Gibson Firebird. NOTE: This was an outdoor performance and the footage contains glare from the sun.

Introduction Johnny Winter Live Fillmore East Oct. 1970

For decades now, we’ve thought of Live Johnny Winter And as the seminal live Johnny Winter document from the early part of his career. That record, taken from performances at the Fillmore East and from a gig in Florida, was comprised mainly of rock & roll covers and a couple of originals. As a single LP it clocked in at just under 40 minutes. It smokes, but not as hard as this set, recorded a week or two before at the Fillmore East in 1970. Sony let Collectors' Choice take some prime stuff from the vaults for this one. This is the Johnny Winter And group simply tearing it up on a selection of originals and covers. The sound quality is phenomenal and the energy on this gig not only rivals that of the previous record, it leaves it in the dust. For listeners who are casting a wary eye at this review, one need only compare the two versions of “Good Morning Little School Girl,” which are only a second different in length. That said, the symbiotic interplay between Winter and second lead guitarist Rick Derringer (who went by his real name of Zehringer then) on this version sounds like a switchblade duel. The other two cuts that are duplicated, “It’s My Own Fault” and “Mean Town Blues,” are both much longer on this gig. The former clocks in at 22 minutes and the latter at 18. The improvisation and guitar challenges are voluminous, wildly energetic, and creative. “Highway 61 Revisited" here contains the slide guitar workout from Winter we hoped for on the Second Winter album and never got. The furious abandon he plays with is unchallenged on any of his live records; it’s Elmore James by way of Mike Bloomfield with Winter's gnarly single-string fills, full of distortion and barely controlled volume. The version of “Mean Town Blues” on this set becomes the definitive one -- in large part because of Derringer’s complementary counterpoint lead work -- as does “It’s My Own Fault,” which transcends its slow tempo and becomes something wholly other. The closing read of Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin'” is only 4:33, but makes one wish it were three times that long. Its fiery, steel-melting intensity features some of the most vicious slide guitar on record to come out of the '70s. The only track that really doesn’t impress here is “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” but not because its performance is substandard. It’s simply that in comparison to all the brilliant spontaneity and furious energy on the rest of the set, it feels too controlled. But that’s hardly a complaint. Even though Derringer wrote it, this one blows away the Johnny WinterA studio version or Derringer's own hit single take. This set blows the stuff in Winter’s own officially released bootleg series away, and becomes his definitive live recording, hands down.

Live Through The '80s features eighteen red-hot Johnny Winter performances, captured live in venues both large and small, compiled from the master recordings. Among the concert footage you'll find on Live Through The '80s are appearances at Massey Hall in Toronto, circa 1983; a 1984 performance at the Capital Theater in Passaic, New Jersey; and highlights of a raucous show at the 1984 Roskilde Festival in Denmark.

Hardcore Johnny Winter fans already know this, but the mid-1980s was a particularly creative time for the guitarist. His association with the noted blues label Alligator Records resulted in three good-to-excellent albums - 1984's Guitar Slinger, 1985's Serious Business, and 1986's Third Degree - and the decade was bookended by 1980's Raisin' Cain and 1988's The Winter of '88 albums. Throughout the decade, Winter led a potent "power trio" of musicians that included talented bass player and harpist Jon Paris. It's an era of the guitarist's career worth revisiting, Live Through The '80s a welcome addition to the (still growing) Johnny Winter catalog.

Her accurate descriptions of Winter's childhood in Texas, from his early days listening to Howlin' Wolf on KWKH radio and seeing B.B. King when Johnny was 16 to his days playing at the Vulcan Gas Company, jammin' with Jimi Hendrix, Woodstock, and his revitalizing of Muddy Waters' career in the late 1970s make this book as much about the times as it is about this iconic guitarist. In its first year, it went into its third printing, an impressive accomplishment for a blues book.

It seems every time you watch a television commercial or a movie trailer these days, Edgar Winter's rock classics Frankenstein and Free Ride leave nostalgic baby boomers humming, but what has the eclectic rock seventies star been up to in the last 30 years? If you haven't been keeping up with his musical career, you will be pleasantly surprised by Edgar's new DVD, Live at the Galaxy.
Like a classic white burgundy, Edgar Winter has aged well. Dressed in black with a matching flowing cape, he makes his entrance smiling from ear to ear, accompanied by three GenX-ers (more about that later).
"Is everyone ready to rock and roll?" It is decisively apparent that Edgar means business with the opening tune, Keep Playing That Rock'n'Roll, a biographical song from his first album Entrance, which is still relevant today.
Edgar winds his way through Turn on Your Love Light, a spirited R&B number from his hard working White Trash days, to the familiar Free Ride and the sexy Texas, from his latest Winter Blues album. Edgar shows his softer side with Fly Away, a near-symphonic orchestration that mixes classic and gospel piano and expressive vocals.
Next up is the humorous New Orleans, from Winter Blues, that includes a Dr. John impersonation, followed by a full-blown Mardi Gras parade.
Next up is the monster, Frankenstein, which captures the band's unique and diverse skills. Having a #1 hit song that is part jam session is a blessing for Edgar Winter, allowing him to create a fresh and updated arrangement of this rock classic. Edgar closes with Tobacco Road, and fondly reminds the audience how much he loves and respects his older brother, Johnny.
The surprise on this DVD is his accompanying trio, Doug Rappaport on guitar, Mark Meadows on bass, and Chris Frazier on drums. They showcase their cocky talents with three powerhouse solos, which seem to outdo each other. But Edgar Winter is the teacher of this class, challenging each student to mimic his vocal gymnastics with their instrument.

With an 8 p.m. start, and the headliner on by 9:05 p.m., by the time Winter's 80-minute show was over, there was only about an inch of snow on the ground, although the howling winds and whiteout conditions made the trip home a bit slow. Initially the venue's management expected a slew of no-shows, but with nothing falling until about 10 p.m., the place was packed by the time Winter took the stage.

Winter, 65, is in relatively good health these days, his various drug problems behind him. Although he played the whole show while seated, there was nothing remotely slow about his playing, or his song choices. Winter plays these days with a backing trio, and drummer Vito Luizzi, bassist Scott Spray, and guitarist Paul Nelson provide a solid framework of the bar-band boogie and blues that the albino guitar ace specializes in. Saturday night they also provided stadium-level rock show volume, which was not such a good thing, although Winter's compelling guitar lines were clear throughout.

Early on Winter did a blistering "Key to the Highway," his frenetic single note runs seeming to gallop up and down the fretboard. The r&b song "Sugar Coated Love" became something akin to heavy metal blues in the quartet's treatment--not great, but certainly different. One of the best numbers all night was an early swing/boogie apparently titled "She Likes to Boogie Real Low," where the band sounded more like a swing band with serious guitar muscles.

But it was firmly in the blues and boogie pocket that Winter and his crew remained for most of the night, with "Miss Ann" and "Tore Down," the latter sung by Luizzi, prime examples. But several other songs, like "Bad Luck and Trouble," seemed to fit too easily into that boogie/shuffle stereotype, and it seemed like the same basic song with different lyrics grafted on.

One of Winter's more intriguing songs was "Black Cat," which seemed to explore the Led Zeppelin kind of rock/blues fusion more than the usual blues routine. Winter's take on Jimi Hendrix' "Red House" was also a new perspective, a slow and biting arrangement that saw him go from slide guitar runs to sheets of heavy chording, and then into big, ringing single note runs. It was an impressive and masterful performance, if at times a bit plodding.

Nobody would complain about the lively sprint through "Boney Moroney" that Winter and his band cooked up. And the galloping rowdiness at the heart of "It's All Over Now," an old Rolling Stones chestnut, was something you'd have expected from Winter thirty years ago. Something apparently called "Mojo Boogie" was yet another interchangeable, utterly forgettable, shuffle. But the turbo-charged finale was a fiery rendition of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisted," where the tempo was so fast Winter's vocals were almost too quick to catch. His slide work was marvelous there, keening howls from his guitar as if it were a living thing, and a nice quote of Hendrix' "Third Stone from the Sun" to conclude it was an inspired touch.

That alone made the long ride home in the snow worthwhile.

Chicago bluesman Joe Moss opened the show with a tasty and soulful 35-minute set, almost all originals. Sprightly songs like "Monster Love" and Moss' tuneful soloing earned them a standing ovation from the crowd. The Moss band was performing later Saturday night at the adjacent Water Street Cafe, and if not for the blizzard, more than a few fans would've made sure to catch them after this show.

Johnny Winters Name ist seit über vier Jahrzehnten das Synonym für einen Bluesrockgitarristen der Extraklasse. Seine musikalische Entwicklung brachte ihn in den letzten Jahren den traditionellen spartanischen Bluesformeln immer näher. Rau und ungekünstelt verstand es der "weisseste Bluesgitarrist der Geschichte" (New Musical Express) mit enormem Einfühlungsvermögen diese schwarze Musik nachzuempfinden und authentisch umzusetzen.
Geboren am 23.02.1944 in Leland, Mississippi, und aufgewachsen im texanischen Beaumont, zeigte der fünfjährige Johnny zunächst Interesse für die Klarinette, wechselte anschließend zur Ukulele und hielt im Alter von elf Jahren erstmals eine Gitarre in der Hand. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Edgar Winter spielte er in verschiedenen Schulbands und trat unter dem Namen "It & Them" und "Black Plague" auf. 1962 brach Johnny Winter ein Studium am Lamar Technical College ab und trampte nach Chicago, um den Blues hautnah zu erfahren. Er frequentierte die einschlägigen Clubs und spielte u. a. mit Mike Bloomfield und Barry Goldberg. Zurück in Texas wurde wieder Bruder Edgar sein Partner, lediglich unterbrochen von seiner Zeit in Houston, Texas, in der Johnny Winter mit Tommy Shannon (b) und John Turner (dr) ein Bluestrio bildete.
Johnny Winter ist längst zu einer lebenden Legende geworden und zählte laut einer kürzlich durchgeführten Umfrage in den USA zu den bekanntesten Künstlern seines Genres. Ein Beweis dafür waren die enormen Umsatzzahlen des bei Columbia/Sony erschienenen Albums "The Best Of Johnny Winter". Aber auch im Hinblick auf aktuelle Neuproduktionen blieb Johnny Winter erfolgreich tätig. Das mit Produzent Dick Sherman eingespielte und 2004 veröffentlichte Album "I’m A Bluesman" brachte ihm eine Grammy-Nominierung ein und erreichte in den USA den Status der bestverkauften Blues-Produktion des Jahres.

	Collectors information/Description: "Canned Heat" is a blues-rock/boogie band that formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The group has been noted for its own interpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 "Canned Heat Blues", a song about an alcoholic who has desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called "canned heat". After appearances at Monterey and Woodstock, at the end of the '60s the band had acquired worldwide fame with a lineup consisting of Bob Hite, vocals, Alan Wilson guitar, harmonica and vocals, Henry Vestine or Harvey Mandel on lead guitar, Larry Taylor on bass, and Adolfo ('Fito') de la Parra on drums.

Yhtye sai levyllä hieman kuivakkaalta kuulostavaan materiaaliin mainion svengin. Kuuden jälkeen väki pakkautui lavan eteen katsomaan viimeisenä soittanutta Johnny Winteria, 63. Pitkään erilaisista terveys- ja päihdeongelmista kärsinyt Winter näytti lavalle tepastellessaan hauraalta ja ikäistään vanhemmalta. It was the long week that grew longer. After Uncle John Turner died six days before his tribute show, there was a faint sense of relief. Not that he was gone – that was terribly difficult in itself – but that the psychic weight of his illness and his pain were lifted from his wife, his loved ones, and his friends.

Antone’s was already buzzing late that Wednesday afternoon. Winter’s RV was parked in front of the club, just like the old days when Albert King would pull his bus up in front of the Sixth Street club. “I Play the Blues For You,” read the banner on the side of King’s bus. Winter’s vehicle had no such proclamation, but he didn’t need it. His presence alone said, “I’m here to play the blues for you, Unc.”

The bands were scurrying around loading equipment as Erin Jaimes began the monumental task of getting the show going. Veteran scenester and gal-about-town Emma Little organized the silent auction in her inimitable way, and I set up tables for the “health and education sector” that Kumi Shannon joked we were in charge of. As it was, the Liver Foundation of Central Texas, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, the Texas Organ Sharing Association, and SIMS were all well-represented, thanks to the LFCT’s Ginger Busboom and Brandi Smith and SIMS’ Sandi Bruce and Catarina Sigerfoos. Club flack Jessica Jarrett buzzed around leaving guest list info for Ilsa Haynes at the door while Susan Antone dropped by to check on things. Things were good.
Erin Jaimes kicked the music off early, soon joined by Carolyn Wonderland and Eve Monsees. It was a girl group begging for a regular gig. Fueled by loss and love, they stood tall as women do in that situation, held back the tears when possible, and played like the men. The show sold out the moment the doors opened and if “feeling the love” sounds like a corny phrase, it was a palpable sensation in a club that’s seen some mighty blues mojo in its day.

There’s plenty to say about the show that would just be a trite combination of the usual superlatives you’ve come to know and love from us rock critics. Yet whenever death is involved, there’s a primal urgency, a reason for going full-bore, smoking six strings like Johnny Winter did, or like James Cotton, doing the black snake moan in his harmonica.

The two of them playing their hearts out beside each other was so stunning, such raw blues magic, right there on the stage, that it seemed obvious the show was attended by illustrious unseen spirits.

Alan Haynes and Appa Perry likewise played fine sets of pain-in-my-heart blues, but between tag-teaming as emcee with Jody Denberg and Mark Murray and working behind the tables, the music was more solace for me than show. I salute all the bluesmen who played that night, but to me, the evening was made by the blueswomen. Not just Erin, Eve, and Carolyn, but some of the coolest babes I've ever had the pleasure of leaning on bars with over the years: Songwriter Kim Banks Dallesandro in from L.A., Val from the badass but short-lived Lamplite Saloon circa 1975, W.C. Clark’s manager Vicki Moerbe, and the aforementioned Emma Little. They were there to pay homage to the blues and to their friend. But they were also there for Turner’s widow Morgan, the one who returns to a now-empty bed.

Thanks, girls! Y’all were the women behind the scenes that made that show rock.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Uncle John was a childhood friend of another southeast Texas native, Johnny Winter. While playing drums with Winter in 1968, Turner convinced him to try a full-blown blues band format and sent for his friend Tommy Shannon to play bass. Success quickly followed, and the trio went on to record what many consider to be three of Johnny Winter’s finest albums: “The Progressive Blues Experiment,” “Johnny Winter,” and “Second Winter.” With fourth member Edgar Winter, they played Woodstock in 1969, as well as numerous other festivals and shows around the world.

I didn't know what to expect from Johnny before the gig. I'd heard rumours of his improving health and, as a result, improved singing and guitar playing. However I was aware that he would still be seated for the gig and his health was still far from good.

The Astoria was an ideal venue for johnny; smoky, atmospheric and a good size for an intimate gig. When i entered the backup band had already started. It took me a little while to realise that the support act was the young blues protege Scott Mckeon. I heard him play through 4 or 5 rock-blues numbers. His slightly grungy sound was not particularly to my taste and his music, in my opinion, was not really ground breaking or technically complex but still a solid, entertaining band that was suitable as a support to Johnny.

It was around quarter to nine when johnny's band stepped up to the stage. They were greeted by a rapturous applause from what looked like a completely sold out audience. However, after about 30 seconds of playing through a warm-up number before Johnny took to the stage, the poor sound mix and set up became apparent. The Drum mix was appalling with certain cymbals and the snare barely audible and the bass drum far too loud so that it sounded mushy. The bass was not ringing clear and i think the PA speakers could have done with being a little bigger in order to cope with the volume they wanted to operate at; this may have improved the clarity of the sound.

The drummer proceeded to introduce Johnny before the man himself appeared, guided by an assistant from the side of the stage. However, he walked confidently before taking his seat and, with guitar in hand, launched into some classic johnny licks. I was prepared to see Johnny seated and not in the best of health but, initially, i still found it hard to watch my hero looking so weak and frail. He did look considerably better than on the 'Live At Times Square' DVD though.

The first full song he played was 'hideaway'. The sound quality was still not great and I was still finding it hard to watch. However, Johnny's guitar playing sounded good and the band was tight and rocking. His second tune, 'Sugar coated Love', was a mixed bag. His vocals were strong and not dissimilar from the power during his heyday but to me it seemed Johnny hadn't really woken up. He yawned twice during the song. Once in a solo and once while he was singing! The sound was still mushy. The next song was 'She likes to boogie real low'. Gradually everything was improving. Johnny's vocals were great as well as his guitar playing. The sound was getting a little better. 'Miss Ann' was the turning point for me. The audience started bopping and Johnny was sounding great. I soon got used to him being seated and began to enjoy the whole experience alot more. From what I can recall, following Miss Ann, he played 'BlackJack' (absolutely fantastic. great vocals. lightning guitar and good sound), 'Hoochie Coochie man', 'Tore Down' (sung by the drummer. Not fond of his vocals), 'Lone Wolf', 'Johnny Guitar', 'It's All Over Now' (Paul Nelson on rhythm guitar), before picking up the Firebird for some slide guitar. The sound got better throughout the gig.

The climax of the gig was the final encore numbers, 'Mojo Boogie' and 'Highway 61' that Johnny played on slide. These just proved that Johnny Winter is still the master of slide guitar. Mojo Boogie was superb and Highway 61 was simply awesome. It was like a dream being able to see Johnny playing Highway 61 in the flesh.

All in all, it was a great gig for me. I had always wanted to see Johnny and i'm so glad I have. I found seeing him looking so frail quite hard to watch at first but his guitar playing and vocals were excellent and reminiscent of when he was in his prime so it was not long before I forgot about his appearence and just enjoyed the music. It was a shame about the poor sound quality but it got better as the performance went on. I would say that if you have not seen Johnny Winter yet get out there and see him before he's gone. He's on good musical form at the moment and puts on a good show

T o quote the title of one of his better-known albums, Johnny Winter is Still Alive and Well,” and quite turned around from the point he was at just a few years ago when assistants had to help him make it onto a concert stage and James Montgomery had to be enlisted to handle vocal duties for the legendary blues rocker.

Winter’s health is back and his vigor is on display each night he takes to fronting a spry trio in which he both flaunts his encyclopedic knowledge of blues licks and sings in full-powered voice. Winter has even re-asserted his raucous version of Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited” into his live sets.

We had to stop doing that for a while. There were just too many words,” recalled Paul Nelson, a fellow guitarist who now manages Winter’s career.

Winter himself credits Nelson for stopping a career slide that began in the ’90s. Winter’s health declined, he was going broke, and his guitar-god reputation was being overtaken by that of an artist prone to canceling shows.

But since breaking from former manager Teddy Slatus, Winter has gone on to earn the endorsement of Gibson guitars, which is making a Johnny Winter signature Firebird model, and guitar slides manufacturer Dunlop is also marketing a Johnny Winter pinky slide. And this spring Winter is teaming for shows with his brother Edgar and Rick Derringer for the first time in decades, signaling the end of a sibling and musical estrangement.

Winter is also in the midst of putting together a new album, one he wants to call Roots” and will feature a bevy of guests, including brother Edgar and Derringer, who together some 30 years ago created essential white boy boogie with such seminal tracks as Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo” and Tobacco Road.”

But those going to see Winter when he plays tomorrow and Saturday at the Bull Run in Shirley better not expect to find Johnny Rock ’n’ Roll.

I don’t like playing rock ’n’ roll. I got away from playing it,” Winter said.

Instead, Winter is bent on distilling his potent blues brew, an elixir that contains Texas twang, Chicago shuffle, Southern soul and country grit. There isn’t an influence Winter seems to have missed or hasn’t figured out how to weave into his one distinctive style.

He’s a sponge. He learns from everything he listens to,” Nelson said.

Nelson and Winter met in 2000. Nelson was recording guitar tracks in Connecticut for an XFL broadcast. Winter was using the same studio, and word got to Nelson that the guitar great was looking for a couple of more songs to include on a record.

Nelson offered up two songs; Winter liked them and actually hired Nelson to play on the album. Winter eventually used a third composition and made Nelson a member of his band.

So here I am. I meet Johnny Winter. Write three songs for him that appear on a record released by Virgin records and am at the Grammys with him all within a year’s time” Nelson said. But there was always a storm brewing.”

And that storm was the one between Winter and Slatus. Nelson blames Slatus for keeping Winter hooked on pills and booze, and likewise with robbing the cloudy-minded artist of money owed him for performances and merchandise.

Shortly after I’m A Bluesman” revived Winter’s stature, the guitarist developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Nelson said that when Slatus was convinced Winter’s career was over, he milked the guitarist even harder. Nelson and Winter joined forces to fire Slatus, and a few months later Slatus died.

Nelson and the rest of Winter’s band — drummer Wayne June and bass player Scott Spray — weaned Winter off his addictions and joined him along a slow road back to health. Winter withstood surgery to correct the carpal tunnel syndrome as well as hip surgery.

But in the end, Nelson said, we got our friend back.”

When I told Montgomery we didn’t need him any more he said, ‘That’s great,’ because he knew that meant that Johnny was better,” said Nelson, who only plays on a couple of numbers during an evening’s Winter storm.

Winter said he prefers the trappings of a trio.

The 64-year-old Winter does much of his work on a small-body Lazer electric guitar. But he still hauls out his trademark Firebird when he wants to play slide guitar. Winter confessed that he first picked up the oblong Firebird because it looked cool. Luckily, it sounded great as well.

Winter started playing music around his native Beaumont, Texas. Columbia Records released his debut album in 1969 and Winter blazed a trail through the ’70s with albums that touched on every facet of the blues, ranging from full-tilt rock ’n’ roll to simple acoustic material, in effect creating a musical bridge between Lynyrd Skynyrd and John Lee Hooker. Winter’s career faltered in the mid-’70s because of a drug addiction, but he rebounded with the Still Alive and Well” album. Winter capped the decade by producing and playing on three landmark Muddy Waters albums, I’m Ready,” Muddy Mississippi Waters Live” and King Bee.”

Winter bounced around record labels through the ’80s, releasing three titles on Alligator Records before Virgin Records approached him.

The Winter resurgence of late includes a packed slate of concerts through the U.S. and Europe as well as production of teaching manuals and a career-spanning box set of music.

As high and low as Winter has been in his career, the bluesman sounded remarkably even-keeled in assessing his career. But he made one thing clear, both in practice and creed: You’ve got to be indestructible as a bluesman.”

Johnny's band starts off the set. Paul Nelson demonstrates his exemplary guitar talents. Wayne June and Scott Spray round out the group and set the scene for a much anticipated, memorable musical experience.

At 8:30 P.M., Johnny Winter walks out on stage and quickly sits down. The fact that he walks out on stage unaided, is a significant indicator of his current health. Johnny opens with “Hideaway,” a shuffle blues, and I can immediately sense he is physically much better. Johnny’s playing is deliberate, clear, lively and creative. Scott Spray takes a short bass feature that jumps. There is a rhythmic change to a straight 4/4 tempo from Wayne June, and then back to the hypnotic and absorbing boogie shuffle.

On “Sugar Coated Love,” Johnny’s fingers show evidence of being much stronger. His leads are inventive and tough. His brash and ballsy style is back and there is an excellent musical groove. Johnny’s finger-style playing and lead guitar melodies, accompanied by a tenacious vocal delivery, are impressive. Johnny’s vocals are persuasive and articulate. Johnny’s back in excellent form. The band is jellin’.

“Boogie Real Low” is a slow swing and the band is tight. Johnny’s vocals reach the high register and are powerful. The band executes dynamic stops for contrast and musical emphasis. Johnny executes double-time strumming that is very clean and clear. His lead guitar string bends are right on the money. Wow! This is very moving. The band accents are well executed. Wayne June is performing with machine-like precision and Scott Spray’s bass is succinct and excitingly staccato.

“Miss Ann” is a shuffle boogie in the key of G. Johnny performs lead guitar and vocals in an answer/response form. The band is hot and very together. Johnny’s leads are sparkling and his formidable vocals are rich, with superior sustain notes and skillful use of breath. Johnny’s double picking and blues scale runs are well phrased. His double strumming is precise and exacting. I notice Johnny’s fingers are resilient, long and lean.

“Black Jack” follows which is a Ray Charles composition. This slow blues is fantastic. Johnny’s vocal growl is back! His vocal execution is clear and robust. Johnny’s high register vibrato vocal is smooth and sexy. Johnny plays slow, passionate leads and cleverly executes double-time melodic changes for dynamic emphasis. His melodic phrasing is superior. He double strums the chord melody, with confident ease. Johnny executes clever phrasing, dynamic stops and melodic changes for pure performance excitement. His lead note bends and double-time picking is exceptional. The band builds to a strong crescendo and dynamic stop by Wayne June, which brings cheers from the ecstatic audience.

“Tore Down” features the talented drummer, Wayne June, on lead vocals. Wayne is an excellent vocalist. He is quite able to deliver strong lead vocals while effortlessly playing impeccable drums. This outstanding boogie style is very spirited and tight. The next arrangement, “Lone Wolf,” is a more Rock & Roll feel. The band’s execution is enticing, unyielding and potent. The musical accents are vibrant and enthusiastic. Wayne’s cymbal work, utilizing rhythmic accents on the crown of the cymbal, is captivating. These accents are succinct and provocative.

“Hootchie Cootchie Man” is a Muddy Waters composition. The introduction of the song features Wayne’s telling the story of Muddy Waters. The slow shuffling Rock & Roll delivery is impressive. Wayne describes how Muddy said, “Johnny was his son.” The musical groove is commanding and moving. The band is cohesive and resolute. Wow! Johnny is smokin’! His lead guitar playing is controlled and fresh. His execution is thrilling.

“Johnny Guitar” is next. Johnny wails, “They call me Johnny guitar.” What a tremendous storyline and vocal delivery. Johnny’s endurance is rather phenomenal. He is not slowing down what-so-ever. It is quite ironic that while Johnny wails incredible leads on his git’fiddle, he actually manages a very natural yawn, remarkable! The band is strutting along in an unparalleled and magnificent show of strength.

“It’s All Over Now” is smokin’ tight. Johnny executes incredible guitar riffs. Paul Nelson returns on second guitar and contributes skillfully. Johnny is strong and unwavering to the end. Absolutely no let up at all. The band is red hot. Johnny leaves the stage as the audience stands and goes utterly wild!

Johnny returns with “Mojo Boogie” and the music is at a fever’s pitch. The tempo is simmering and a maddening presence fills the room. This kind of spontaneous charisma characterized Johnny Winter performances of the past, and the fire is back tonight!

“Highway 61” concludes the evening with Johnny playing outlandish slide on his Firebird guitar. This is dazzling slide guitar. It is total bedlam as Johnny literally blows us all away with his musical performance genius. The band is on fire as the spontaneous energy propels the entire performance twenty feet straight up. The execution is powerful, cohesive and totally invigorating. What a finale! Johnny’s slide guitar is commanding, as everyone is standing and cheering. His simultaneous vocals are forceful and compelling. Johnny’s performance is ignition on the launch pad, like the Johnny of old. The trio is stimulated to the highest level of the evening.

Johnny Winter puts on an inspirational performance tonight. His health has returned and is clearly reflected in a truly stellar performance. Wayne June, Scott Spray and Paul Nelson are fantastic. The aesthetic and poignant grasp of a band’s endeavor is difficult to quantify and describe, but the overall effect is something magical to behold!

Johnny Winter ascended the stage at B.B. King’s Blues Club near Times Square on February 9 like blues royalty. After 50 years of dedicating his life to the music while learning from and supporting first-generation Chicago blues legends, in particular Muddy Waters, he has been accorded the same honor and respect. His loyal subjects cheered his appearance and hung on his every note and utterance.

It has been one long, hard road back from the edge of physical and financial collapse that he was approaching following years of abuse and neglectful mismanagement, and the journey is not over yet. However, Johnny grows stronger in body and spirit with each engagement, for which he owes an incalculable debt of gratitude to his new vibrant manager, Paul Nelson. A ferocious and accomplished guitarist in his own right, equally at home playing the real blues or hip progressive rock, Nelson opened the show with Johnny’s regular rhythm section of bassist Scott Spray and drummer Wayne June, and blazed on his Strat to the obvious delight of the crowd. He would graciously retire to the wings when Johnny took his seat at the mike, but in a welcome change from previous shows, Nelson was brought back for a romping encore version of Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now.”

In between, Johnny presented his regular set, including “Hide Away,” “She Likes to Boogie Real Low,” “Blackjack,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Johnny Guitar” and “Tore Down,” with the welcome addition of “Miss Ann.” Time and tides may have diminished the explosive energy that once blew audiences away, but Johnny has replaced the pyrotechnics with tough, deep blues that burn like a banked coal fire, warming and lighting up everything and everybody they touch. The slow blues of Ray Charles’ “Blackjack,” coming after a series of bangin’ shuffles embellished with a textbook full of riffs, afforded Johnny the opportunity to reach way down in his soul for sensuous bends and shimmering vibrato as he crooned the gambler’s lament. One of the finest white blues singers of all time along with Gregg Allman, Johnny can still send a shiver down the spine when he leans into the mike and pours his heart out.

As always, the highlight of any Johnny Winter show occurs when his well-worn 1963 Firebird V is wheeled out to replace the utilitarian Erlewine Lazer that he favors the majority of the time. Its open D tuning was put to the test on Johnny’s own “Mojo Boogie” and Bob Dylan’s classic “Highway 61 Revisited,” which the Texas blues master can now rightfully claim as his own. Sizzling treble licks and growling bass runs skittered off his slider as he recounted Dylan’s take on the Old Testament parable about Abraham.

Though no official poll has been taken, it is likely from their reaction that Johnny’s fans would love to hear him play even more slide, including solo on a National Steel at which he once excelled. We can only hope. In the meantime, every note sung and played is a treat not to be missed.
